Welcome to June - Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds to continue across Hawkesbury today

Yes, it’s June 1, and another windy day across the Hawkesbury with the Bureau of Meteorology saying in an alert just now that damaging winds will continue until this afternoon.


The warning is for people in Greater Sydney – which includes the Hawkesbury - Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and parts of Mid North Coast, Hunter, Central Tablelands, South West Slopes and Northern Tablelands Forecast Districts. Risk for damaging winds continuing on and east of the Great Dividing Range today, starting to ease from this afternoon, says BOM.


Latest BOM forecast at 10.57am today Weather Situation: A deep low pressure system over the southeastern Tasman Sea will maintain a vigorous westerly flow over eastern NSW today. A trough embedded in the westerly flow will clip the south coast, strengthening winds over Alpine and southeastern NSW before moving away from the coast this afternoon. DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible on and east of the Great Dividing Range from the Illawarra to the Queensland border, easing this afternoon. DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts to 100 km/h are possible on and east of the ranges in southern parts of NSW. BLIZZARDS are likely about locations above 1800 metres, and possible above 1200 metres. The National Parks Service of NSW recommends that people consider postponing back country travel until conditions improve. Conditions are expected to ease over southern parts during this afternoon and evening. Locations which may be affected include Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong, Nowra, Armidale, Canberra and Goulburn. Saturated soils bring an increased risk of gusty winds toppling trees and powerlines, particularly along elevated terrain.
