SAT COVID UPDATE – 210 NEW NSW CASES – RISING CASES IMPACTING HOSPITALS – 53 IN ICU, MANY ARE YOUNG

Aug 1, 2021

“The continuing numbers are impacting on our hospital system,” says Health Minister Brad Hazzard this morning.

The source of infection for 122 COVID cases is still under investigation.

Cases of COVID in the Hawkesbury are still steady at 6 this morning. There were 367 more tests in the Hawkesbury in the last 24 hours.

Twenty-one of the new cases in the last 24 hours were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of another 120 cases remains under investigation.

“Currently we have 198 people in hospital. Fifty-three of those are in intensive care – 27 are requiring ventilation,” said the Minister.

Young people are also being affected more than older people, at least in terms of serious hospitalisations.

“Can I say the Delta variant is partial to younger people,” said Minister Hazzard.

“It definitely is circulating in the younger community and I want to stress that another 210 locally acquired cases, two-thirds – two-thirds – 138 cases, were people under the age of 40 years old,” the Minister said.

“So my message to younger people is, please, understand this is a virus that you can be susceptible to.”
