Big day Saturday for local basketball fans as World Cup Trophy on display with Hawkesbury Jets

May 20, 2022

The Women’s Basketball World Cup Roadshow Tour is coming to Hawkesbury Basketball Association at Hawkesbury PCYC this Saturday and a star appearance will be the real World Cup Trophy.

Officially called the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup trophy, its appearance on a tour before this year’s World Cup sees the golden Cup’s first stop at the Jets’ South Windsor base.

FIBA is the International Basketball Federation – it’s called FIBA because it was originally in French (Fédération internationale de basket-ball) and was set-up in Switzerland.

When Australia last hosted the Women’s Basketball World Cup in 1994, it inspired basketball greats including, Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor and now, the FIBAWWC Roadshow is on its national tour to inspire the next generation of talent, in the lead up to the World Cup playing out of Sydney Olympic Park from September 22 to October 1.

Stacy O’Toole and Cleo Pickard of Hawkesbury Basketball have been running successful girls programs for some time at Hawkesbury Jets and they encourage girls to come along on Saturday and see what it’s all about.

Both Stacy and Cleo are recipients of the Basketball NSW scholarship, I Am A Girl I Can Do Anything, for their work in girls’ basketball.

“We have a new program for girls, called Girls Got Game, introducing girls from ages 8 to 16 to basketball,” Ms O’Toole says.

“Girls can join this program if they are beginners, or just starting to play in our comps.

“Basketball is becoming more and more popular with our girls and women as our elite athletes become more successful and there are pathways all the way to the Olympics in basketball.”

“FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup will attract even more attention to the sport and we are really looking forward to seeing our Aussie women compete which will bring even more girls and women to our sport,” says Ms O’Toole.

“We are very proud to be displaying the cup at PCYC Hawkesbury, also known as The Hangar – Home of the Hawkesbury Jets – this Saturday.”

Hawkesbury Basketball have competitions for girls and women, plus special skills just for girls, as well as programs for all from age 5 and upwards.

The Hangar at the PCYC is accessed via 16 Stewart St, Greenhills Way, South Windsor and the Trophy will be on show this Saturday May 21 from 8.30am 12 noon.
