Airbnb Shakeup Threatens Local Businesses

The NSW government has short-term rental accommodation in its sights, posing a threat to the local tourism industry and economy. The Minns’ government is considering major changes to rules and regulations governing short-term rental accommodations, including platforms like Airbnb and Stayz.

The proposed changes include regulatory and revenue measures, including higher registration fees, more stringent approval requirements, and limits on the number of nights a property can be let for non-hosted short-term rental accommodations. Additionally, revenue measures include levies on booking revenues and day fees per guest staying in short-term rental accommodation.

Council to Monetise Local Tip Amid Landfill Crisis

Hawkesbury Council has voted to expand its Waste Management Facility (WMF) and attempt to transform what it describes as a “strategic asset” into a cash cow by charging neighbouring councils and businesses to use it as Sydney faces a fast looming landfill crisis,

Sydney is forecast to run out of landfill space by 2036 according to the Environmental Protection Authority. Without this expansion, Council’s landfill will reach capacity by 2029-2030 and the organisation said that this would require the construction of a waste transfer station to transport waste to another waste facility, “likely resulting in higher fees and charges for the Hawkesbury community.”

Political Will Threatens Toll Reform For Western Sydney

There is no dispute that Western Sydney residents bear unequal toll burdens but for reform to occur the Minns government is going to have to stare down disgruntled motorists/voters, the powerful toll operators (namely Transurban) and possible threats of legal action. Heading towards a 2027 election that leaves a big question over whether the government has the political will to do so.

An independent review of motorway toll pricing in Sydney, led by Professor Allan Fels and Dr David Cousins has proposed significant reform. At the heart of their recommendations released this week is the creation of a state owned tolling authority – State TollCo – which would take control of the motorways and set prices.

Rising Costs and Community Anger: Council Faces Backlash Over Soaring Road Expenses

There was much self congratulation in the Hawkesbury City Council chamber on February 13 when a motion was passed to seal Packer Road at Lower Portland

Councillors voted unanimously (only Cr Patrick Conolly was missing from the meeting) with some previously opposed to the project first scoped in 2017, changing their minds, with road safety becoming an increasing priority with several fatal crashes in the Hawkesbury recently.
